According to a Tuesday report by The Information, Apple is expected to unveil its foldable iPhone as early as 2026. This might be the largest redesign of the hardware for the company’s best-selling device. It is a huge departure from typical smartphone designs that could reshape the competitive landscape of the mobile industry.

According to a report from an international publication The Information, Apple, which is valued at $3.46 trillion, has started discussion with Asian vendors to buy components for the production of its upcoming foldable gadget. The move is similar to Samsung Electronics‘ strategy shift in 2019, when it pioneered the foldable smartphone market with devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Z bseries.
According to The Information, Apple was working on two folding iPhone prototypes as early as February. However, it appears Apple has landed on a design, as The Information reports the device has an internal nickname, V68, meaning “the idea has moved beyond the conceptual stage” and is now “in development with suppliers.“
This design concept is similar to the functionality of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip, which released in 2020 and gain popularity despite its high price range of $850 to $1,900 on the Samsung website.
According to the report, Apple’s foldable iPhone has advanced beyond the ideation stage, with development plans in the works. This strategic move is intended to capitalize on the growing demand for foldable smartphones, which incorporate powerful artificial intelligence elements to improve user experience and functionality.
According to a May Counterpoint Research study findings, the global foldable smartphone market expanded 49% in the first quarter from a year earlier, which was its highest move of growth in six quarters. Huawei surpassed Samsung to take the top rank for the first time.
Additional to the foldable iPhone, there are rumours that Apple is investigating improvements to its camera technology, such as incorporating a mechanical mechanism that permits users to manually modify the aperture size. The development could allow iPhone users to create customizable depth-of-field effects, thereby improving their photography capabilities.
According to report, the development timeline for a foldable iPhone may extend beyond the typical 24-month production cycle, with delays and technical challenges potentially impacting launch schedules.
