CrowdStrike Update Devastates 8.5 Million Devices, Reports Microsoft

About 8.5 million Microsoft devices were impacted by a worldwide tech outage linked to a software upgrade by cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, the company said in a blog post on Saturday.

Microsoft said in a post, “We currently estimate that CrowdStrike’s update affected 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows machines,”.

The event, which stemmed from a normal software update by CrowdStrike, a significant player in the cybersecurity business, caused widespread system outages. The disruption halted flights, forced broadcasters off the air, and affected critical services such as healthcare and banking.

While the percentage was small, the broad economic and societal impacts reflect the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many critical services,Microsoft stated.

CrowdStrike has partnered with Microsoft to create a solution that would speed up the update for Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure. Microsoft also stated that it is collaborating with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform to share information on the effects experienced throughout the industry.

The air travel industry, which was heavily impacted by the disruption, fought to recover throughout Saturday. Thousands numbers of flights were canceled, stranding travelers or causing lengthy delays. Delta Air Lines, one of the most seriously impacted carriers, reported more than 600 flight cancellations by 10 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT) on Saturday, with more disruptions predicted.
